The Truth Exposed: You Will Never See It The Same Way

Have you ever felt too lazy to work despite knowing that there are important things to be done? It is either you are truly sick or there is something that is stopping you from getting out of the bed. If you are wearing glasses just like me, then probably, it is because of how your current glasses are no longer serving you its purpose. How can you finish doing your tasks on time if you frequently experience headaches or you could barely read for more than 15 minutes? You might end up getting depressed because you are unaware of what is going on with you.

When I was younger, I thought it was cool to be wearing one. Not really thinking that one could look like a genius (obviously, I am not), I just think I look good in it (no violent reactions, please! LOL). The only thing is, I wasn’t wearing my own glasses, it was my mom’s because I didn’t need one.

I love reading pocketbooks and fashion magazines. But one day, I could barely read for 10 minutes. I had to close my eyes every 10 minutes so I can finish reading a paragraph. I got scared. Was I going blind? A few days later I had my eyes checked. It turned out I had astigmatism. It is a common condition wherein the vision gets blurred. This may be caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or because of the curvature of the lens of the eye. In order to correct my vision, I started wearing reading glasses at 27 years old, when I was pregnant with my second child. For the next few years, I just use it for reading. I had the lenses upgraded a few times. I was advised to use bifocal lenses, but I refused since I don’t want to look much older than I truly am.

Just about 5 years ago, I started using my glasses all the time. I could barely read without them. And being constantly in front of my laptop every day may probably have gotten it worse. I used to write a lot in one day, but I noticed that the enthusiasm slowly faded as I often feel uneasy reading for too long. Adjusting the screen brightness to full was the only way that I could somehow feel comfortable doing my online job. But, I also need to zoom in the texts by 150% so I could read everything clearer. Sometimes, I get these migraines which I ignore. I don’t like relying on medicines too much which is why I try to just shrug off the headache and proceed with what I need to do.

I am getting old, I guess. There is no denying that. And to deprive myself of a happy life is absolutely crazy. I could not work after 6 pm because squinting my eyes just hurts even more. I needed to have my eyes checked again. And when I was advised to use progressive glasses, I didn’t hesitate. I just want to have a clear vision.

What are progressive glasses?
Progressive glasses are multifocal lenses that look exactly like single lens glasses. You won’t see any lines that would separate different grades of lenses. This allows you to see clearly at all distances without those annoying lines that bifocals or trifocals have. Practically, people aged 40 and above (now, you know), are most likely in need of this kind of glasses since an age-related eye condition called presbyopia is likely to occur, which reduces one’s ability to see clearly.

Using progressive lenses have benefits:
·      Because there are no visible "bifocal lines" in progressive lenses, they give you a more youthful appearance than bifocals or trifocals. This is the most common reason why more people today wear progressive lenses than the number who wear bifocals and trifocals combined.

·      It eliminates bothersome "image jump" caused by bifocals and trifocals. This is where objects abruptly change in clarity and apparent position when your eyes move across the visible lines in these lenses. Using bifocals or trifocals, physically, you would see the lines where the other lens starts, and along with that, you will see the difference on how you see objects around you which could sometimes make you feel dizzy or lightheaded.

·       It provides clear vision at all distances (rather than at just two or three distinct viewing distances). In short, the progressive lens provides you with a seamless viewing experience when watching your favorite movies, reading a pocketbook or just appreciating nature.

Protecting Your Eyes From The Blue Light
Having been working online since 2010, I guess, it has greatly affected my vision. Admit it. You are also guilty of being constantly online even if it is not work-related. Why? Because that is just how technology has changed our lives. Facebook and Instagram have kept us late every night checking on the juiciest gossips, doing online shopping, or even playing mobile games.

You might think that staring at the sun would only be the reason that could affect your vision. But don’t you know that the blue light also comes from your mobile phones and other digital devices, as well as LED and fluorescent lights? Our main source of blue light is the sun and we are more exposed to it when we spend long hours outdoors. This is the reason why we need to protect our eyes when we are outside, to avoid squinting and be troubled seeing because of too much glare. In order to protect the windows to our souls, we need to use Blue light lenses or glasses.

Here are the other reasons:
·        It prevents premature macular degeneration. The blue light may cause damage in the retina since this contains light-sensitive cells.
·        It reduces eyes strain from staring at screens for too long thus prevents you from squinting. And do you know what else could happen when you squint too much? The appearance of frown lines in between your eyebrows! Don’t make yourself older than you are!
·        It prevents your eyes from drying out and having headaches.

The Types of Blue Light Lenses
It is impossible to escape from any blue light source since it is practically everywhere. If you spend long hours in front of a computer, you need to choose a pair of computer glasses to protect your eyes from extended exposure of blue light coming from digital devices.
Similarly, if you are fond of being outdoors, consider it is necessary to use lens coatings to filter out the harmful blue light.

There is one type of lens that is getting very popular these days. They are called the Transition lenses or photochromic lenses that are clear in low light conditions but darken as the light increases. This means that you can use it both for outdoors and indoors. You don’t need to carry an extra pair of glasses when you can have your prescription glasses and sunglasses in one.

The Right Frame for Your Eyes
You may have read from fashion magazines that the shape of the frame that we should use should be in contrast to the shape of our face. But more than the shape of the frame, you should also consider the material of the frame that you need to use.

If your lens grade is 450 and up, this means that the lenses are thicker. And that being said, you would not want to use a frame that would bear too much weight on your face, which could make you look old and make you feel uncomfortable. The solution: Titanium eyeglass frames.

One of the best reasons for choosing a titanium eyeglass frame over other types of frames is its durability. No matter how careful you are, your glasses are bound to break or fall. And you want to use an eyeglass frame that would last you for a long time. Therefore, if you plan on purchasing prescription glasses, you might as well use titanium eyeglass frames which can last for a considerable period of time.

Most eyeglass frames are made of metal or plastic. Since it is not as durable as titanium, it is likely that you would need a replacement just after a few months because the metal or plastic frames deform over time. Titanium is such a reliable material that you can bend and twist it and still, it will go back to its original form. Therefore, those who seem to be a bit careless with their eyeglasses can now be worry-free because the titanium eyeglass frames can withstand a sudden fall.

Happy Eyes, Happy Life
Not everyone would have considered having their eyes checked thinking that it is alright to just be squinting a teensy bit to be able to read. But, our vision is truly bound to reduce as we get older. It actually speeds up when we don’t take care of our eyes as much as we should.

To become productive in any kind of work that you do, it is not enough that you don’t feel any aches and pains in your body. You also need to have your eyes checked. Frequent headaches should never be ignored. Sometimes, it is the first sign of vision problems. But of course, there are also other medical conditions that may cause your headache. So, better be safe than sorry. Always have yourself checked by your doctor.
