How to Pack When Traveling with Children

Parents would want to take their children for a vacation. But what stops them is the burden of having to bring so many things with them especially when they still have a baby or a toddler. Sometimes, a supposed family outing turns into a disaster because it is either they have packed too much or they have forgotten some of the things which the children may need. Should family fun be sacrificed just because of all these?

Just like doing everything else, you will need a plan. First, check in with your travel agency which is the best place where kids may enjoy going. You should also prepare your kids on what to expect. Plan the things that they may enjoy while you are traveling. Remember that you are traveling as a family and you also want that while kids are enjoying, they are also able to learn new things along the way.

Here are a few tips on how to pack for your next family trip:

·        It is important to make sure that you are aware of the luggage weight that you are allowed to carry. Never start packing unless you know exactly how much weight you are allowed to have. For hand-carried bags, make sure that you have enough formula and food for your baby. Bringing in bottled water while checking-in is not allowed in airports. But, do inform the airport personnel that you are traveling with kids who still take baby formula.

Having more than one bag is inevitable, particularly when traveling with kids. Choose from various affordable and lightweight luggage sets that can accommodate everything that you need to bring with you.

·        Remember to pack a day’s essentials inside your hand-carried bag like your airline tickets, passports and printed itinerary, mobile phones, medications, toys for the kids to entertain them while on board, first aid kits, etc. Be sure to never leave without them.

·        Make use lightweight, canvass zipper bags.  Label each pack with your kid’s name ensuring that each bag has one shirt, one bottom, and other essentials. It is likely that your kid would need changing while on board particularly if he spills or soils his clothes.

·        On your way to the airport, the kids may feel a bit restless and may have a tendency to just want to be let go. Take with you a bag that contains the things that you may need to keep your children busy while on the road. This should include:

Ø books
Ø card games
Ø an extra pair of clothes
Ø fleece blanket for the kids
Ø infant supplies
Ø portable DVD with headphone
Ø snacks
Ø toys
Ø water bottle

·        Make sure that you pack only the right amount of clothes that you will need while on vacation and choose the appropriate clothes that will match the kind of activities that you are planning to have on your vacation.

·        Pack comfortable favorites of your children. You know how some of them may want to just be having that special toy or pillow with them all of the time. And you wouldn’t want to forget that. Otherwise, your whole trip would just be a disaster because of all the crying that your kids will do.

·        The weather may sometime be unpredictable. Make sure that you pack raincoats and rain pants. Also, bring along sweaters to keep them warm.

·        Never leave without these travel essentials with you like soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Store these in resealable bags to ensure that just in case the containers have been damaged, they won’t spill over the other things inside the luggage. But don’t bring those big tubes and bottles. Carrying them in huge containers will just add up to the weight of your luggage. Just buy from stores in case you ran out of those. Most importantly, never forget to bring your first aid kit.

·        It is almost impossible to travel light when you are traveling with the whole family especially if there is still a baby. Instead of bringing strollers, you may want to just rent them out from baby gear and infant supplies. You can inform them ahead of time on how you wish them to bring the things you need to you.

·        Teach your kids how they should pack their things, too. You can’t expect them to be good at it at first. They may want to place all of their toys inside the bag. But teach them the basics on which are the only things that they should bring when they travel. Carefully explain why they only need to choose the things that they would really need. That way, they will also know their responsibility to carry their own things than just rely on you to keep them all the time. Let them bring their own zipper bags so that lessens your burden on carrying them.

A family vacation will never be as daunting as before if everything has been carefully planned and the children are well informed on what to do and to expect.
